ÉMILE DECOEUR LAPIS-GLAZED UPLIGHTER C. 1928

ÉMILE DECOEUR LAPIS-GLAZED UPLIGHTER C. 1928

Courtesy of Formative Modern

A rare glazed earthenware uplighter by French ceramicist Émile Decoeur (1876-1953). Decoeur's work was once aptly described by a critic as “sober in form and opulent in material.” His creations can be categorized by restraint, graceful proportions, and glazes with rich depth of color. The idea of Japonisme is also present in his work - the rhythmic, concentric circles accenting the base of this particular form suggest waves or rippling water. Within the blue glaze, subtle hints of browns, grays and purples shine through. The calm, organic qualities of Decoeur’s work brought a definitive style to modern French ceramics through technique and simplicity of form. Impressed on underside: “Decoeur." With original hole in for electrification (note that this was not added later). Wired for US outlets with a black silk twist cord and switch. Provenance: The collection of Claude Roger-Marx, Paris.

This item requires special shipping and handling. The cost of shipping is not included in the object price and will be organized separately. For a shipping quote, please email [email protected].
